How to Get Your Toddler to Brush Their Teeth

Dental Care Queens, NYIf you are no stranger to practically wrestling and sitting on your toddler before bed every night to brush their teeth, then you may need some help. Because we at Woodside Dental know tooth brushing can be stressful for both you and your toddler, we have a few helpful tips to get your little one excited about tooth brushing.

Grab a Furry Friend

No, we aren’t talking about your pet dog or cat here— we mean their favorite stuffed toy or animal. If your toddler starts to get fussy and doesn’t want to brush their teeth, have them grab their favorite stuffed toy and practice brushing on them. The more comfortable your child feels about brushing, the easier it will be.

Have Them Choose a Toothbrush and Toothpaste

What’s more exciting than having new things when you’re a toddler? Just about nothing. Make toothbrushing something that’s exciting for them and have them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. Then when you brush their teeth in the morning and at night, you can point out their toothbrush and toothpaste and get them excited.

Practice During the Day

Practice makes perfect, and toddlers are no exception. If you are at home with your toddler during the day, try having them brush their teeth a few times and do things like sing songs while they’re brushing. The more they brush their teeth, the more they will see that it can be fun.

Brush With Them

Toddlers want to be just like their mom and dad. Try brushing your teeth at the same time as your toddler, and they will see that you’re not trying to torture them but that it’s fun to do as a family.

If you have a toddler who is refusing to brush, use these tips to make things easier. To learn more, or to schedule an appointment, contact our Woodside office today and call 718-898-6010.
